I’m sure you have been on How To sites and have been offered a free e-book. I think there are two ideas behind the free e-book.
- To a lesser extent the author wants to help you.
- To a greater extent the author wants to help themselves.
I do believe that the contents of their book can help you get XYZ in your life or blog or whatever but the reason they “give it away for free” is so that they can collect your email address.
Why would they want your email address? So they can pitch offers to you. This is how they make your money.
It’s called give and take, or reciprocity. This is the idea of reciprocity,
“In social psychology, reciprocity is a social rule that says we should repay, in kind, what another person has provided us.” (source)
This happens to us all the time. Free cheese samples at Cosco, free chocolate at the chocolate factory, etc.
Businesses, bloggers and anybody in business will use the social rule of reciprocity on you to further their income.
Now that you know what reciprocity is think of situations in your life where this has happened and share.
